THE FIRST MENSTRUAL CUP

The first menstrual cup was bullet-shaped and patented in 1932 by McGlasson and Perkins – a midwifery group.

WHO FIRST MADE IT FAMOUS?

1937 – Actress/ singer Leona Chalmers patented her version of the menstrual cup, the first commercially available cup.

Her cup was made out of rubber and didn’t need anything to hold it in place as it was designed to be secured by the pelvic floor muscles.

A shortage of rubber as a result of WW2 forced a halt in the production of the cup. Production resumed after the war.

THE HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS/SINGER WHO TOOK IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Many women were too afraid to try the cup due to the stigma around the taboo topic of women touching their vaginas and the belief that the cup would compromise a young woman’s virtue.

Leona partnered with a large corporation to produce the cup from 1950 to 1973 to try and compete with the gaining popularity of disposable pads and tampons.

Again, the cup was unsuccessful, and the partnership ended in 1973.

THE EVOLUTION

1980s – a new company introduced their version of the menstrual cup called The Keeper, which was inspired by Leona’s original design. This version of the cup was made of latex rubber – it is still very popular as many people still use it today.

In the 2000s – medical-grade silicone gained popularity and started being used as the primary material for menstrual cups because it’s softer, hypoallergenic and bacteria-resistant, unlike rubber.

TRENDY, SEXY AND SORTED

The menstrual cup, or as it is commonly known, the diva cup, has become more and more popular – especially with active, busy women and high-performing sportswomen.
